Our flaming chalice symbolizes religious liberty and refuge from religious persecution. The symbol you see above is the one we designed especially for our Unitarian Universalist Congregation here in Ormond Beach.

Hans Deutsch, an Austrian artist, first designed a flaming chalice during his work with the Unitarian Service Committee during World War II. To Deutsch, the image had connotations of sacrifice and love. The flame represents the fire of commitment.

Two circles added in 1961 symbolize the unification of Unitarianism and Universalism and the individual spirituality of each person. Other UU congregations and churches create their unique versions of the flaming chalice or use the one from the Unitarian Universalist Association.

We light our flaming chalice in worship to create a reverent space for reflection, prayer, meditation, and singing.
